Mt. Parnitha is just outside of Athens

athens area pigeonsThe forested mountain at the core of this small National Park lies just north of Athens, and is 1413 meters (4635 feet). The park covers 9416 acres (3812 hectares) and has rich flora and fauna.

Lower down the terrain is typical limestone maquis, with the usual kermes oak, and many flowering bushes and flowers, including a variety of orchids. Greek fir forest (rare in Attica, due to exploitation) is farther up, with openings here and there, with orchids, a dwarf iris, and some tulips (though less than in the past). Birds of prey breed here; there may still be some eagle owls.
