Byzantine Church Virgin Swift Healing

Byzantine Church in Athens: Virgin Swift Healing

The church is clad with slabs of marble from ancient, Roman, and early Christian buildings. The Byzantine stone masons "christianized" the pagan sculptures by carving crosses between the flowers, animals and human figures. Scholars link the love of Antiquity, attested by the use of spolia, that is archetectural material from earlier buildings, with the educated antiquarian and Metropolitan of Athens, Michael Choniates (1180-1204) and therefore date the church to the 12th century.
