The Vouraikos Gorge is one of the most beautiful in Greece and only a couple of hours or less from Athens via the the road to Patras. This gorge has its own small railway so you dont evenhave to walk it if i dont want to. Departures from Diakofto to Kalavryta daily at 8 am, 10:30, and 1:15 pm, duration 1 hr, cost 3 euro.
Operational since 1896 and one of a kind in Greece the cog wheel railway passes through some of Greece's most beautiful country. One embarks at Diakofto, stops at Zahlorou and finishes in Kalvryta. There are rooms to rent and the Gorge can be walked by hikers.

Works to refurbish the country's only cog wheel rack railway - covering the scenic route from Diakofto to Kalavryta in the northern Peloponnese - begin on Monday, the Hellenic Railway Organization said yesterday. The 22.6-kilometer route, built during 1889-1896, is just 75 centimeters wide, making it the narrowest railway line in Europe. The 7-million-euro reconstruction is expected to last for about a year, during which time the line will not be operating.
